I was born in a large city in the heart of America. I spent much of my early years with my grandmother, but visited my dad often who operated a farm. According to the family, I played in the sunshine with nature much more often than I did with my dolls. I loved the interaction with animals and I was sure they talked to me and I could understand. I didn't know that mama sow would hurt me when I crawled in the pen with goodies for her and petted the piglets, nor did I question that there was danger in crawling in a cave with a mother coyote and her pups.
I not only was never hurt, but no attempt was made by the animals to warn me off. Yes, my dad stopped me when he found out what I was doing, but by then I had found my own little world. As I grew I could never hide from anyone because one or more little animals would be trailing.
When I married and started raising a family, I still had numerous pets. I became interested in breeding and found many people hadn't the slightest idea how to treat and care for the little bird or animal. This soon led me to the pet industry where I was deeply involved for many years. I can't recall what event or even if there was a particular reason why my specialty became birds, but I would spend most of my working years with big and little feathered friends.
During those years I often spoke at various clubs, universities and organizations. I wrote many featured stories and articles and never ceased in learning about the old adage, "the more I learn, the more I know I have to learn." I made many friends and found my greatest assistance, help and knowledge would come through the local Farm Advisor and various state and government agencies. They can be extremely beneficial if you're serious and play by the rules.
Today, I have retired due to advanced Multiple Sclerosis, but I still enjoy my many pets and spending many hours of pleasure as a local artist.
My lifetime philosophy remains: Whether you're a breeder or owner of a pet, the animal or bird has a right to expect care and respect as a living vital part of our world.
